Where to stay near Kainchi Dham
Four honest options, including the ones that are not us.
Most people book Nainital by reflex, then discover they are an hour from the ashram on a road that queues. There are four sensible bases and each of them suits a different trip. We are one of them, and we will tell you when we are not the right one.
Bhowali, about 9 km from the ashram
The closest of the four and the most convenient if the ashram is the whole reason for the trip. Bhowali is a working junction town with a well known fruit market, so it is busy rather than scenic, and you are on a main road. Good for one night. Less good for three.
Ramgarh, about 18 km
Where we are. Forty minutes to the ashram, an hour to Nainital, and considerably quieter than either. This is the fruit belt, so there are orchards rather than shops, and that is the whole point: there is no market, no Mall Road, no traffic. If you want the ashram early, a proper valley view, and somewhere your children can run around, this works. If you want a town at the gate, it does not.
Bhimtal, about 20 km
A lake, more hotels than anywhere else on this list, and more choice at every price. Busier than Ramgarh, quieter than Nainital. A good middle option if you want a lake but not the Nainital crowd, and if having plenty of restaurants nearby matters to you.
Nainital, about 22 km
The obvious choice and usually the wrong one for this particular trip. It is roughly the same distance as Ramgarh or Bhimtal, but the road out of town is slow and the parking is the real problem. Nainital has government lots and no private parking on Mall Road, which after a seven hour drive from Delhi with children is not a small thing.
Stay in Nainital if the lake and Mall Road are the main event and the ashram is a side trip. Do not stay there if it is the other way round.

Whichever you choose, go early
Parking at the ashram fills from about nine in the morning and by eleven the road backs up in both directions. Leaving at seven turns a difficult morning into an easy one, from any of the four.
