Ramgarh in the monsoon, honestly
The best season here, and the one most people are talked out of.
Most people are advised not to visit the hills in the monsoon. The advice is not wrong exactly, but it is incomplete, and it means a lot of visitors miss the three months when this place looks like nothing else in the year.
What actually happens
From roughly the first week of July to the middle of September, cloud sits in the valley below us and rises through the day. By late afternoon it comes over the property. Not near it, through it. You stand on the terrace and the cloud arrives at the railing, moves past you, and the valley disappears and reappears every few minutes.
This is where the hotel got its name. It is not a marketing device, it is a weather pattern, and it is the reason a small number of guests deliberately book monsoon dates every year.
The temperature
It sits below twenty degrees most of the season and drops further at night. Bring a light jacket even in July. Guests arriving from a forty five degree Delhi find this the most immediately convincing argument the hills make.
The roads, which is the real issue
Hill roads close in the monsoon. Landslips happen, sometimes with no warning, and a route that was open in the morning may not be open in the afternoon. This is the genuine risk and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance.
What to do about it: build a spare day into your plan, call us on the morning you set out so we can tell you what the road is doing, and do not schedule a flight out of Pantnagar for the same evening you leave the hills. The people who have a bad monsoon trip are almost always the people with no slack in the schedule.
The small things nobody mentions
- Leeches on the walking trails after heavy rain. Closed shoes and socks, not sandals.
- Power cuts during heavy storms. They are usually short. We keep the hot water running.
- Laundry does not dry. Bring more clothes than you think, because the humidity means nothing you wash will be wearable the next day.
- Insects in the evening if you leave the balcony light on with the door open. Simple to avoid, easy to forget.
What is better in the monsoon
The property is quieter, so you get the terrace largely to yourself. Everything is green in a way it simply is not in April. The orchard fruits, and pear, plum, peach and apricot are all doing something in these months. And the light in the evenings, when the cloud breaks for twenty minutes before dark, is the light every photograph of this place is trying to capture.
Who should come and who should not
Come if you want quiet, cool weather, green, and you have flexibility in your travel dates. Do not come if your trip has a hard deadline at the other end, if walking trails are the main reason for the visit, or if you need certainty more than you need atmosphere.
